Tea India 242 and 0 for 0 lead New Zealand 235 (Latham 52, Jamieson 49, Shami 4-81, Bumrah 3-62) by 7 runs

India began the second day needing a big effort just to stay alive in the Christchurch Test, but so big was their bowling effort they ended up with a first-innings lead of seven runs. However, at one point India looked good for a much bigger lead. Kyle Jamieson’s 49, with support from Colin de Grandhomme and Neil Wagner, turned this into a second-innings shootout. New Zealand began the day at 63 for 0, lost their first seven wickets for 90 runs, but the eighth and ninth wickets ended up adding 75 runs.

India were handed a lifeline by the conditions: the pitch got quicker, and offered excessive seam movement almost through the day. However, it is one thing to have those conditions, quite another to use them so effectively to come back after being so far out of the contest. Also it was their skill that now became prominent as opposed to when it just swings: Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami bowled with a proud seam, hit the hard lengths, and their pace again became their friend. Between them they took seven wickets, and the selection of Ravindra Jadeja proved to be spot on: he broke two burgeoning partnerships, and took two outstanding catches, one of them right up there with the best outfield catches ever taken in international cricket.

We hope India is capable to win this match. One good partnership is required
