“As you say the words — Do Or Die — I just don’t feel that level of commitment or intensity”. So said one of my business coaching clients this week as they wrestled with a project whose deadline had been pushed back and back and even further back.

“As you say the words — Do Or Die — I just don’t feel that level of commitment or intensity”.

So said one of my business coaching clients this week as they wrestled with a project whose deadline had been pushed back and back and even further back.

And so urgency,a can-do attitude, and being a mover and shaker were alien concepts.

For goodness sake I came from a family where my father was set up with two trials for professional soccer clubs and he didn’t turn up for either — it was in the genes to just not bother!

“Most people, when they’re either going to die or succeed, they succeed.” –Tony Robbins

What you would you do if someone pointed a gun at you every day for the rest of your life and told you to either accomplish your goals or die? How would you respond? What would your reaction be?

I can tell you what would happen.

You would succeed. You would win. You would do whatever was necessary to make your goals come true. If you didn’t know where to start or how to go about it, you would figure it out. You would work seven days a week with passionate intensity. And you would win.

Fortunately, no one is ever going to hold a gun to your head and ask you to perform. But that gun-to-the-head intensity is the secret ingredient to every super-successful person’s career—an intensity of determination that you need to have to accomplish your dreams.

To succeed on the level of Bill Gates, Mark Cuban, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, or J.K. Rowling, you have to work, sacrifice, and persevere as if your life depends on it. You have to Make Your Success A Life Or Death Commitment.

Here’s 2 reason why you should make the gun-to-the-head mentality your way of life:

#1- Huge Success Only Comes To Those Who Work Like Their Lives Depend On It

According to Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, 10,000 hours is the magic number—the minimum level of hard work needed to reach a world-class level of success or greatness. It takes 10,000 hours—roughly 10 years—of intense work to become a master at your chosen craft.

Everyone has the ability. Everyone’s got potential. Anyone can accomplish great things. But the question is: will you? Will you do whatever it takes to make your goals come true? Will you work your butt off for 10,000 hours to accomplish your dreams?

Everybody can. But not everybody will.

The only difference that separates the folks who have potential from the ones who use it is hard work. The only difference that makes someone more successful than you is a Life Or Death Commitment to putting in long hours of work when everyone else is either resting, partying, or sleeping.

That’s Why You Should Make Success A Life Or Death Commitment. Commit to working your butt off for your goals 7 days a week as if someone’s holding a gun to your head. Because you need to have that gun-to-the-head intensity and work ethic to be really successful. Huge Success Only Comes To Those Who Work Like Their Lives Depend On It.

#2- When It’s All Or Nothing, Giving Up Is Unacceptable

Have you ever gave up on something? Have you ever set a resolution, a goal, a plan, or an ambition only to abandon it a couple weeks or a few months later?

What made you give up on your vision so quickly? Why was it so easy for you to quit?

It wasn’t important to you.

Giving up on your plan to lose twenty pounds, quit smoking, quit drinking, launch a business, travel the world, buy a car, earn a promotion, or read ten books wasn’t very hard for you to do because your success was not important enough to you to motivate you through the setbacks, adversity, and challenges.

You gave up because your success was not important enough to you to push you through the pain. You gave up because you weren’t committed to chasing your dream with a Life Or Death Intensity.

J.K. Rowling didn’t publish her first installment of The Harry Potter series until she was an unemployed single mother struggling to make ends meet. Steve Jobs didn’t give life to the iPod, the iPad, the iPhone until he suffered through the pain of being fired from his own company. Tyler Perry didn’t evolve into a Hollywood heavyweight worth hundreds of millions until he survived years of childhood abuse, produced plays that never took off, and suffered through homelessness.

The reason J.K. Rowling, Steve Jobs, and Tyler Perry were able to weather the tragedies, the struggles, and the adversity is because they decided that their success was important enough to suffer, struggle, and fight for. They decided to make the accomplishment of their dreams was a Life Or Death Commitment. Their thought process was: “Either I’m going to accomplish my dreams, or I’m going to die trying.”

That’s the secret sauce for getting yourself to accomplish your goals. You have to commit to your success with a Life Or Death Intensity—commit to doing whatever it takes to make your visions come true.

If you want to win, you can’t approach your success as something you can procrastinate on, give less than your absolute all to, or push off until next year. If you want to succeed, you have to commit to working your butt to accomplish your vision as if your life depends on it. You have to think to yourself: “Either I’m going to win, or I’m going to die trying. Failure is not an option.”

Cut yourself off from all other options, alternatives, and opportunities to give up. Work 7 days a week like your life depends on it until you start to see results. Make Your Success A Life Or Death Commitment. And no one will be able to stand in your way or to stop you from getting that life you deserve.

2 Reasons To Make Your Success A Life Or Death Commitment

What is the point of being successful when you are ultimately going to die?
What is the point of living if we are going to die and not remember anything?
If we’re all going to die one day, what’s the point of struggling your guts out for success?
What is the point in life if you are going to die anyway? I am 16.
If we are all going to die anyway, why does anything matter?
Why do we study if we end up dying anyway?

Do or die situation examples?

The do or die raid concept was specifically created for Pro Kabaddi League to bring more excitement to the game of Kabaddi.

After two successive empty raids, the third one becomes a do or die raid for the team where the raider must score or else risk going out and giving a point to the opposition. The raider can score a bonus point and avoid going out although this is considered risky as attempting a successful bonus is very difficult to even for seasoned raiders. As it is a do or die raid most of the time raiders go for touchpoints, but some get a bonus point.

Breakthrough a challenge: Succeed or die

Breakthrough a challenge: Succeed or die

One of the great bloggers, Dwayne Melancon has suggested a good technique to add fuel to your mind and help to achieve any difficult tasks. He suggested making a belief in your mind which you must complete a set of tasks no matter what. For instance, make yourself believe that you will die if the project is not successful, and you pretend and act this is true and it will happen:

You will die if your project is not successful in 6 months.

  • What will you do to ensure you don’t die?
  • What things are you doing that put your project at risk? What are you going to do to stop those things?
  • What actions will you take to increase the odds that you’ll be around in 6 months?
  • Who will you ask for help to increase the chance you’ll make it?

An interesting idea – this technique should help on killing procrastination too.

How do we define success? There are many different tactics for how to be successful in life, but the strategy that works best for you may depend on your view of success itself. We often think of it as doing well at work or earning a high salary.

While professional accomplishments can be one piece of the puzzle, it leaves out many other important areas of life. Family, romantic relationships, academics, and athletics are just a few areas where people may strive for success. Your individual definition of what success is may vary, but many might define it as being fulfilled, happy, safe, healthy, and loved.

It is the ability to reach your goals in life, whatever those goals may be. So what can you do to boost your chances of achieving these things? What are some of the habits of successful people?

There is no single right way to be successful. What works for you might not work for someone else. There may not be a perfect combination of ingredients that can guarantee success, but there are some basic steps you can follow that can improve your chances of being successful in life, love, work, or whatever happens to be important to you.

Build a Growth Mindset

Research by psychologist Carol Dweck suggests that there are two basic mindsets that influence how people think about themselves and their abilities: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset.1

People who possess a fixed mindset believe that things such as intelligence are static and unchangeable. Those with a fixed mindset believe that success isn’t a result of hard work—it’s simply a consequence of innate talents.

Because they believe that such talents are something people are either born with or without, they tend to give up more easily in the face of a challenge. They quit when things do not come easily because they believe that they lack the inborn skill needed to excel.

Those who have a growth mindset, on the other hand, feel that they can change, grow, and learn through effort. People who believe that they are capable of growth are more likely to achieve success. When things get tough, they look for ways to improve their skills and keep working toward success.

People with a growth mindset believe that they have control of their life, while those with a fixed mindset believe that things are out of their control.

What can you do to build a growth mindset?

  • Believe that your efforts matter. Rather than thinking their abilities are fixed or stuck, people who have a growth mindset believe that effort and hard work can lead to meaningful growth.
  • Learn new skills. When faced with a challenge, they look for ways to develop the knowledge and skills that they need to overcome and triumph.
  • View failures as learning experiences. People with growth mindsets don’t believe that failure is a reflection of their abilities. Instead, they view it as a valuable source of experience from which they can learn and improve. “That didn’t work,” they might think, “so this time I’ll try something a little different.”

You are correct in saying that what we do in this outer world of physical form is of little importance because ultimately it doesn’t last. And therefore it is a real illusion. Let me try to explain. You may need to read this several times.

The problem is that people mistakenly seek identity in their outer physical form, and are trapped within their minds and emotions. This causes much pain and unhappiness.

Your thoughts of the past and future are illusions created by the egoic mind, which you seem to understand on some level because you asked,’why do we even plan even though we are unsure of the future.’ So you are not your mind, which creates illusory thoughts of past and future; you are consciousness, Self, The Awareness. And that is the realm above the level of the mind, known as the inner body.

How does one differentiate the mind’s illusory thoughts and true identity that is Self, or consciousness? Well, people dwell on past happy or sad experiences or future fears/desires which are not (yet)real in the present moment. This illusion derived from the mind requires TIME to survive. When one lives in the present moment there is NO TIME which means the present moment or Now is Eternal (not to be confused with eternal therefore infinite time). If the human race were to die tmrw, what time would it be? What Time? Time is Now, the present moment, which is eternal. Therefore Self or Consciousness which lives in the realm of the present moment can never die, although physical form can change. Focus on your breathing and ask yourself, ‘what is the mind thinking Now?’ Congrats you are in the present and no longer trapped in thought. Alternatively, be the silent watcher of your thoughts and emotions.

Unhappiness occurs when a Being seeks identity in their minds or their life situation which is within the realm of the outer body. The unhappiness of a past, or a future they fear causes anxiety. Or even unhappiness in their current life situation like a shit job. But remember, life situation no matter how unhappy it may be, is not Life itself. Life is Self, consciousness in the realm of the present moment, whereas life situation is in the realm of the physical world and is ultimately temporary, and therefore an illusion.

So why do we suffer so much pain and hardships, and what’s the point of living at all? Well, suffering is a challenge and an opportunity to awaken and undergo your search for true identity and find true happiness and peace.
